U.S., Mexico Accelerate Discussions on USMCA Review

(MENAFN) Officials from the United States and Mexico have advanced discussions on revising the three-nation trade pact, with both governments committed to expediting the review ahead of a looming summer deadline, Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced Wednesday.

Following high-level meetings in Washington with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Ebrard disclosed via social media that the two nations addressed "the next steps" in overhauling the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the trade framework linking North America's largest economies.

According to a statement from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, both governments are prepared to move forward and "begin formal talks on possible structural and strategic reforms" to the continental trade deal.

Key topics under examination included steel and aluminum tariffs, automotive sector challenges, supply chain vulnerabilities, and access to critical minerals, Ebrard revealed.

"We have made progress on many issues beforehand so that the review can proceed as quickly and effectively as possible," the minister stated.

The developments stand in sharp contrast to Canada's approach. Prime Minister Mark Carney declared Monday that Canada is prioritizing economic independence and expanding trade relationships to decrease dependence on its southern neighbor.

Carney framed President Donald Trump's recent tariff warnings as connected to wider trade discussions with Canada, particularly as the mandatory USMCA review approaches.

Under the agreement's provisions, all three partner nations must finalize the review by July 1. The trade pact, which superseded the 26-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, became operational on July 1, 2020, with built-in reassessment requirements every six years.
