U.S. Dispatches Small Contingent of Military Personnel to Nigeria

(MENAFN) Washington has positioned military specialists in Nigeria, marking an expansion of American involvement in West Africa's security crisis, US Africa Command's top commander revealed Tuesday.

General Dagvin R.M. Anderson disclosed the deployment during a press briefing, tracing the decision to discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu held in Rome during the final months of 2024. Both leaders reached a mutual conclusion that enhanced measures were necessary to counter "the terrorist threat in West Africa," the general explained.

"That has led to increased collaboration between our nations, to include a small US team that brings some unique capabilities from the United States in order to augment what Nigeria has been doing for several years," Anderson stated.

The military presence follows US President Donald Trump's December authorization of aerial strikes against Nigerian targets, with indications that additional American combat operations could be forthcoming in the nation.

Nigeria has come under intensified Washington pressure after Trump threatened direct military intervention, claiming the West African nation fails to safeguard its Christian communities. These allegations prompted Nigeria's designation as a Country of Particular Concern—a US congressional label assigned to countries where religious persecution allegedly occurs.

Abuja has categorically denied accusations of Christian genocide, maintaining that militant organizations attack civilians without regard to their faith backgrounds.
