China Pushes Back at U.S. Nuclear Test Claims

(MENAFN) Beijing has categorically dismissed American allegations of Chinese nuclear weapons testing as entirely unfounded, Li Song, China's permanent representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, declared Wednesday.

U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno leveled accusations at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, claiming China executed a nuclear explosive test in June 2020. The allegation drew swift rebuttal from Robert Floyd, executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), who released a statement confirming the International Monitoring System detected no activity matching nuclear weapon test characteristics during that period.

Li characterized the American claims as wholly unsubstantiated, condemning Washington's actions as recklessly irresponsible and motivated by hidden agendas designed to justify potential U.S. nuclear testing resumption. China categorically rejects such tactics, he emphasized.

The Chinese diplomat revealed Tuesday's meeting with Floyd, where he forcefully challenged Washington's baseless charges while reaffirming Beijing's unwavering dedication to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

As an original CTBT signatory, China has consistently championed the treaty's core principles. Following its 1996 nuclear testing moratorium declaration, Beijing has scrupulously maintained its commitments without engaging in any prohibited activities, Li stated, highlighting international recognition of China's steadfast support for nuclear test prohibition consensus.

Li called on Washington—possessing vast nuclear stockpiles—to fulfill its primary nuclear disarmament obligations, a responsibility long recognized by the international community.

American distortion of Chinese nuclear policy represents calculated political maneuvering aimed at maintaining nuclear dominance while evading disarmament responsibilities, Li stressed. The United States poses the greatest threat to international nuclear order and worldwide strategic stability, he added.

Li pressed Washington to reaffirm the five nuclear-weapon states' testing moratorium commitment, uphold global nuclear test prohibition consensus, and implement concrete measures supporting international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation frameworks.

China remains devoted to peaceful development and maintains a strictly defensive nuclear posture, Li affirmed. Beijing's nuclear policy exhibits enduring stability and will continue contributing constructively to global peace and security preservation, he concluded.
