LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, August 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A new wearable device to measure livestock methane emissions has been commercially released in a major step forward for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from livestock at scale.

ZELP Sense is a low-cost, easy-to-use system for continuously measuring methane emissions from individual cows in real-world settings. The technology combines a wearable device, automated data transfer and a user-friendly app to enable more practical and scalable measurement in commercial and research settings.

Existing measurement tools can be expensive, operationally complex, and dependent on controlled settings or long animal adaptation periods, limiting their deployment beyond specialist facilities. Unlike systems that require animals to enter controlled chambers or voluntarily visit fixed feed stations, ZELP Sense is designed to track emissions in real farm environments, where cattle can continue their normal feeding and drinking behaviours.

Methane is categorised as a “super pollutant” because it is more than 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. The greenhouse gas is responsible for more than 45 percent of recent global warming. Reducing volumes of methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow rising global temperatures, due to the greenhouse gas’ shorter lifespan in the atmosphere. With 70 percent of agricultural methane emissions coming from livestock digestion, measuring these emissions is an important first step in assessing and validating mitigation techniques.

The ZELP Sense wearable device collects emissions-related data from close to the cow’s nostrils, which is then processed using ZELP’s proprietary algorithms. Results are delivered, in grams per day, via ZELP Insight, a mobile-optimised web application. The system has been developed and tested through more than 20,000 hours of real-world use, with initial evaluation trials indicating that ZELP Sense can produce emission estimates of comparable reliability to existing accepted approaches.

ZELP Sense gives users a practical way to understand emissions and identify which mitigation strategies are working in practice. Governments, companies and researchers can use it to conduct large-scale emissions inventories, improve emission factors, support selective breeding programmes, and generate the real-world data needed for reporting, incentives and regulation. For organisations developing and assessing methane-mitigation tools, it offers a faster, more cost-effective way to test, iterate and verify their impact in real farm conditions.

ZELP Sense was developed with co-funding from the Global Methane Hub’s Enteric Fermentation R&D Accelerator, which supports practical, high-impact solutions to reduce livestock methane emissions.

Animal welfare and operational simplicity have been central to the development of ZELP Sense. The wearable device includes a comfortable, breathable headpiece, a flexible nosepiece and a gas-sensing unit integrated with a breakaway safety mechanism so the device can detach if caught. During development and testing, cattle typically only showed a brief behavioural response to device fitting, before quickly returning to normal behaviours.
